Media Icon Mr.Ira Philip Passed Away

Bermudians were last night saddened by news announcing the passing of legendary journalist and Media Icon Mr. Ira Pearman Philip.

Mr Philip died at King Edward Memorial Hospital late last evening from what are believed to be natural causes. It is known that he had had recurring bouts of poor health recently, he was 92.

An icon in his field Mr Philip caught the literary ‘bug’ at a young age Mr. Philip before running the gamut of the media arena, excelling and gaining notoriety in both print and electronic versions. He performed at ZFB during the television and radio station’s early existence and became a star as a result of his brave coverage of the 1968 riots, when he perched himself directly in harm’s way, reporting from Court Street, then a flashpoint for violence. He also made waves producing print at the now defunct newspaper The Recorder.

During his recent twilight Mr Philip was noted for his production of Island Notebook, a feature column highlight seniors for the most part and generally enlightening readers on a vibrant and colourful past.

Fifty-seven years of his adult life Philip spent married to Ismay, who passed nearly a decade ago.

Also an author Philip wrote ‘The History of the Bermuda Industrial Union: a definitive history of the organised labour movement in Bermuda.

In their time of bereavement the Philip family have asked for peace and privacy and appreciatee the prayers and condolences.
